10 Players Who Played For Both Tottenham And West Ham
6. Jermain Defoe
West Ham – 1999-2004
Tottenham – 2004-2008 & 20009-2014
The ex-England international started his career with the Hammers. Harry Redknapp sent him on loan to old club Bournemouth, and he burst onto the scene with scoring exploits.
When West Ham endured Premier League relegation in 2003 despite his best efforts, Defoe stayed loyal but was snapped up by Spurs in January 2004. He spent 9 of the next 10 years at White Hart Lane becoming the club’s 5th highest scorer of all-time with 143 goals. His 23 goals in European competitions took him to the top of the goalscoring chart, one ahead of Martin Chivers.
5. John Moncur
Tottenham – 1984-1992
West Ham – 1994-2003
Moncur’s first steps as a professional footballer came at Tottenham. The midfielder broke through at White Hart Lane in the mid-1980s but struggled to nail down a place in the first team, which saw him loaned out to several clubs before his permanent departure in 1992 to Swindon Town.
Two years at Swindon proceeded Moncur’s move to West Ham, where he remained until retirement in 2003. His combative style quickly made him a fans’ favourite at Upton Park, Moncur ending his Hammers career with 203 appearances to his name. He earns fifth place in our list of ‘players who played for both Tottenham and West Ham’.
4. Martin Peters
West Ham – 1959-1970
Tottenham – 1970-1975
Martin Peters is undoubtedly one of the greatest players who played for both Tottenham and West Ham. He was known as “the complete midfielder” as he could pass the ball well with either foot, was good in the air, and difficult to mark because of his movement.
A West Ham Academy Product, Peters made his debut in 1962 and went on to play for 8 long years for the club. He made 364 apps for Hammers helping them to their first European trophy, the Cup Winners’ Cup, in 1965. He also won the World Cup in that period – the midfielder scored a goal in the final.
Tottenham paid a record £200,000 to sign the Essex-born creator at the start of the 1970s, with Peters going on to feature in 260 matches for the north Londoners. His five-year spell at the Lane brought two League Cup winner’s medals, with Spurs and Peters also triumphant in the 1972 UEFA Cup.
