10. Clive Allen [1984-1988]
Clive Allen joined Spurs from QPR for a fee of £700,000. Clive’s father Les Allen was also a Spurs legend, who had been a regular in the famous 1960-61 all-conquering double team. Thus a lot was expected of Clive and he did not disappoint.
In the 1986-87 season, Clive Allen led the line and scored an extraordinary 49 goals in 54 appearances, a record for the club. He scored in the FA Cup final against Coventry City but was unfortunately on the losing side.
Clive also won the PFA Player of the Year and Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year awards that season. He overall scored 84 goals in 135 matches for the club.
9. Teddy Sheringham [1992-97, 2001-03]
Sheringham initially joined Spurs from Nottingham Forest in 1992. In two separate spells with Tottenham, Sheringham amassed 277 appearances, scoring 124 goals. Hugely popular with Spurs fans, Sheringham established himself as one of the Premier League’s finest forwards.
Sheringham was a class act whoever he played alongside, something in evidence over his two separate spells with Spurs during which time the likes of Jurgen Klinsmann, Chris Armstrong, Les Ferdinand and Robbie Keane all benefited from working alongside him. 8. Jurgen Klinsmann [1994-95, 1997-98]
Jurgen Klinsmann was signed by Spurs in July 1994 from Monaco for £2 million. The fee was a bargain for a World Cup winner and proven goalscorer. He scored 29 goals in his first season as he established an immediate understanding with Teddy Sheringham upfront.
A combined 52 goals in all competitions from Klinsmann and Sheringham saw Tottenham just miss out on European football, finishing seventh. Klinsmann went on to win the 1995 Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year.
He left for Bayern in 1995 in search of European football but returned to White Hart Lane in 1997. His speed was not quite so explosive, his finishing was as clinical as ever and a handy nine goals in 15 league games – including four in a 6-2 win at Wimbledon on the penultimate weekend – helped to secure Tottenham’s survival. He scored 38 goals in 68 games over two spells for the club.
7. Len Duquemin [1947–1957]
Len Duquemin was Tottenham’s main figure of goals in the post-war years. He was known as ‘Reliable Len’ for his hard work. He had the ability to create space for his teammates, and he became a key member of Arthur Rowe’s famous ‘push and run’ side which transformed the style of football played in the Post War period.
His 134 goals from 308 games are all the more impressive for the fact he did not have the opportunity in either the League Cup or European competition, all of his came in the league and FA Cup. He won the League Championship in 1951 having won the Second Division title the year before.
