3. Charlie Buchan [1911-1925]

Charlie Buchan is one of the most celebrated club legends. He is the club’s leading league goalscorer. He could score all kinds of goals, although his speciality was the glanced header. Charlie Buchan was the top scorer when the Wearsiders won the League in 1912-13 and was the country’s top marksman in the 1922-23 season. He, overall, scored 221 goals for the club in 411 apps.

2. Kevin Phillips [1997-2003]

Kevin was one of those mysterious centre-forwards with a sixth sense who always find themselves in the best goal-scoring positions. Add his explosive bursts of speed and smart skills, and you are looking at a prolific goal machine. He scored an astonishing 36 goals in his debut season with the Black Cats. He followed that with another 26 the next season and had his best season in 1999-2000 when he won the European Golden Boot.

1. Bobby Gurney [1925-1950]

Bobby Gurney was a football forward who is the highest goal scorer in the history of Sunderland. He was spotted by another legend of the club, Charlie Buchan, when Bobby was playing for Bishop Auckland. Starting his career at the club of Sunderland in May of 1925, he did not have to look back.

Playing in 390 matches for Sunderland, he scored a whopping 227 goals, which rendered him the highest goal scorer in the club’s history. His achievements also include winning the First Division League title in 1936 and scoring in the FA Cup final of 1937 to make Sunderland the winners of the cup.
