The team that is known as Wolverhampton Wanderers FC today, was once known as St. Luke when it was formed. John Baynton and John Brodie had formed it in the year 1877. In 1889 the club was given Molineux stadium which is filled with a good atmosphere and cheerful Wolves fans.
The journey of Wolves has been a roller coaster ride. There have been decisions that have created history and there also have been decisions that can be contemplated as the worst managerial decisions. People blame the fluctuations in ownership of these decisions.
Many things are responsible for the performance of a team. It is the set of players, the coaching staffs, managers, the coordination amongst players, the coordination between players and staffs, etc. There have been many signings that have resulted adversely for Wolverhampton. 15. Paul Gladon
Everyone knows the degree of risk that goes hand-in-hand with signing a striker from the Eredivisie. Wolves learned it the hard way when they signed Paul Gladon. The 26-year-old arrived at Molineux in the summer of 2016, when Walter Zenga was at the helm, and made three appearances within his first month at the club.
He hardly made any impact on the club and was shown the exit door soon. Wolves would be laughing if they could get back the £1 million fee they invested in Gladon, but that will be easier said than done for a player they probably should never have signed in the first place.
14. Jermaine Pennant
Wolves fans were hopeful when a player with a pedigree like Pennant’s moved to Molineux especially when the team was looking to rebuild for the Championship in 2012/13.
Pennant’s flame at Stoke was pretty much snuffed by Michael Kightly switching from Wolves to Stoke and in October 2012, Pennant looked to rekindle his career in Wolverhampton. Much like most of Solbakken’s signings, Pennant was booed and jeered for poor performances consistently. He made just 15 appearances and even faced losing a contract renewal at Stoke at the end of his spell.
13. Oleg Luzhny
After playing for Arsenal for four years, Ukrainian right-back signed for newly-promoted Wolves in their first season in the Premier League. At the time, he was considered as an experienced defender who was captain of the national side and could help Wolves avoid an immediate return to the second division.
Instead, he only played six games for the club and was then sold as Wolves dropped out of the top flight with a whimper. He is undoubtedly one of the worst Wolves signings ever.
12. Marlon Harewood
When Marlon Harewood was signed for Wolves it was been hyped much. He was considered the best move and there were many articles on the media backing up this move.
But whenever Marlon entered the ground, he was lacking intent. He was lazy with his moves and failed to create even a minimal impact that was expected from him. Thus, the decision to buy him turned out to be a disaster for the Old Golds He appeared five times for the Wolves and went goalless on all the occasions.
11. Andy Lonergan
Wolverhampton has never got a bad record with the goalkeepers. If you see the goalkeeping department of Wolves, the last twenty years have been pretty good and it has been quite stable. However, Andy Lonergan is an exception.
He is on this list of worst Wolves signings ever, because expectations of the fans were a lot from him and he could not stand up to that in the 11 appearances he had.
10. Tony Daley
Graham Taylor signed Tony Daley for Wolves, having managed the winger at Villa and as England boss. Tony played just 21 league games in 4 injury-strewn seasons at Wolves, having cost the club £1.25 million from Villa. On his return to Molineux whilst playing for Walsall, he received a torrid time from the majority of the crowd. He deserves his place among the worst Wolves signings ever.
