2. Rafael Scheidt
One could write a book on his dismal time at the club, which would have been more damaging had Martin O’Neill not drastically changed the club’s fortunes. Signed by John Barnes in December from Gremio for a huge fee of £4.8 million, Scheidt became the first Brazilian to sign for the club. It was soon leaked, however, that Celtic had signed him because Barnes had watched him a couple of times on ESPN, and due to the fact that he had been capped by the Brazilian national team, signed him on the assumption that he would be brilliant….because he was Brazilian!!!
In his few appearances for Celtic, he looked like shell-shocked war veteran with no grasp of what was going on around him, and with Martin O’Neill taking over at the helm, he was sent on loan back to Brazil before being let go. His time at Celtic was a farce and although injuries didn’t help, he never looked like a Brazilian international. The biggest waste of money in the club’s history and a cult hero to all of Celtic’s opponents.
1. Du Wei
A loan signing from Shanghai Shenua in 2005, the Chinese central defender was brought in by Strachan presumably to add to the impact of Celtic in the Asian market after the successful capture of Japanese playmaker Shunsuke Nakamura. The deal was a 6 month loan deal from August 2005, and judging by his one solitary appearance for Celtic, the supporters must have been delighted to see him thumped back home.
One solitary appearance for Celtic was enough for the fans, and perhaps most importantly the manager, to decide that he was simply not good enough for Celtic. That one terrible showing in a Celtic jersey came in January 2006 in an ill-omened Scottish Cup tie against Clyde at Broadwood. In 45 mind-boggling awful minutes, he had managed to get skinned nearly every time a Clyde player charged at him; he was caught out in the air, and was at fault for both goals that Clyde scored that day.
Du Wei was not given a second chance and was quickly knocked back to where he came from. A disaster who did nothing to benefit the club on or off the pitch apart from sell a couple of Celtic tops in China. Probably the worst foreign player to don the colours of Celtic.
