6. Jack Devey
Jack Devey is considered one of Aston Villa’s greatest captains. He played for a variety of local teams before signing for Aston Villa in March, 1891. Jack was a skilful centre-forward, and was exceptionally clever with head. He was Villa’s top goal scorer in 6 of his 12 seasons with the club.
For eight years, Devey captained Aston Villa during which time they won the League championship five times between 1894 and 1900 and the FA Cup twice. Including the famous ‘Double’ in the 1896–97 season.
5. Johnny Dixon
Johnny Dixon spent his entire professional career as a footballer at Aston Villa after writing to the club asking for a trial simply because he liked their name.
Dixon went on to score 144 goals in 430 games and, on top of the 1957 Wembley triumph, he helped Villa back into the top flight by winning the Second Division title in 1959-60. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest Aston Villa strikers ever.
4. Peter Withe
Peter Withe was signed for a then club-record £500,000 at the start of the 1980-81 season. His name has the firmest of standings in Villa folklore as the scorer of the winning goal in the greatest moment in Villa’s history. He is the man who got that famous winning goal against Bayern Munich in the European Cup final in 1982.
He spent five years at Villa, scoring 92 goals in 233 appearances. 20 of those came in the title-winning season.
