Man City vs Chelsea : 2018 FA Community Shield Preview

Defending Premier League champions Manchester City begin their new campaign against newly appointed Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea side in the FA Community Shield clash on 5th August, 2018 at Wembley. The game will mark Chelsea’s 13th appearance in the Cup tie while it will be City’s 11th overall.

Upon the arrival of their new boss from Napoli, Chelsea performed well in the pre-season friendlies. They secured a win against Inter Milan before losing out to Arsenal with both ties ending on penalties.

City on the other hand had a pretty decent pre-season with lots of positives, given that the majority of the World Cup players were still on their holidays prompting Guardiola to travel with a rather young squad consisting of the EDS contingent and only a handful of first-team players.

Both City and Chelsea have won the much-coveted trophy four times and with both sides dedicated in playing attacking football right from the word go, it should be an entertaining affair before the Premier League finally kicks off next week.

TEAM NEWS:

Chelsea: New boss Maurizio Sarri looked confident to begin his new stint at the club with the ex-Napoli manager emphasizing on how important it was to lift a trophy so soon.

“First of all I’m looking forward to playing at Wembley, because it’s my first time. The match will be very difficult for us.”
“I want to win, because it’s very important to have immediately a trophy. But in this moment of the season it’s very important, the performance. We have to improve, of course.” said a confident Sarri.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek returned to full training for the Londeners while Willian is back from his extended break after the World Cup.

Man City: Pep Guardiola has confirmed that the club’s newest acquisition Riyad Mahrez is back in training after suffering an ankle knock against Bayern Munich and is in contention to start tomorrow’s game.

“Mahrez is good. He had a little bit of pain but he trained day before yesterday – I think so (he can play on Sunday),” Guardiola said.
He has also confirmed that his squad will soon return to full strength after the match with only Raheem Sterling and Kevin de Bruyne absent from the training, who were given permission for extended holidays after both England and Belgium made it to the semis of the World Cup. Danilo is also out of action with an ankle injury and will join the squad after recovering.
“Kevin and Sterling are not here but they will be back after the game on Sunday,” Pep confirmed.
“From Monday we will be back all together and think about what we have to do to keep last season’s level.”
